AJ Layague (she/her/hers) is a Filipino-American playwright/composer with degrees from Stanford University, CalArts, UC San Diego, and a post-doctoral fellowship in Asian Studies/Theater & Music from Occidental College. She also studied playwriting at the David Henry Hwang Writers Institute at East West Players. Her works have been performed at Colony Theatre, Montalvo Arts, and Volksbühne Berlin, among others. She is a four-time semi-finalist for the Eugene O’Neill Music Theater Conference, and a 2023 finalist for the Pan Asian Rep Nuworks Festival in NYC.

Cowgirl Katarungan, a Filipino-American cowgirl/truth-teller, recounts crucial moments in Filipino and Filipino-American colonial, agricultural, and legal history from the conquistadors’ first invasion in 1565 to the extraordinary uprising by Visayan sugar planters and barons in 1896 to the landmark miscegenation legal case, Roldan versus Los Angeles County in 1933, all while outlining her recipe for the classic dish chicken adobo. And she does it in verse (sometimes).
